Najib, Irwan arrive at MACC for questioning over IPIC deal

The former prime minister and the ex-Treasury secretary-general are believed to be helping MACC’s probe into 1MDB’s deal with IPIC.

PUTRAJAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak and ex-Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here separately this afternoon to have their statements recorded.

It is believed that the duo are helping facilitate investigations into 1MDB’s deal with International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC).

Najib arrived at 1.53pm today, dressed in a blue suit, while Irwan, wearing a white shirt, arrived at 3.25pm.

FMT reported yesterday that they were expected to jointly face at least six charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM6 billion at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Thursday.

The charges are said to be linked to the 1MDB scandal, the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and two gas pipeline projects in the peninsula and Sabah.

A source had told FMT that Najib and Irwan were expected to be charged with using approved government allocations to settle 1MDB’s dispute with IPIC.

1MDB agreed to settle a payment dispute with IPIC by making two instalments totalling US$1.2 billion to IPIC sometime in August and December last year.

Najib, who lost power to Pakatan Harapan in the May 9 election, is already facing 32 charges of money laundering, CBT and abuse of power in relation to 1MDB and SRC International.

Irwan’s service contract as Treasury secretary-general was shortened to June 14, and he was transferred to the Public Service Department.
