PETALING JAYA:
Rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) today reiterated its call for the government to help Malaysians on death row in other countries following the announcement that accused drug trafficker Prabu N Pathmanathan will be hanged at Singapore’s Changi Prison on Friday.

In a statement, LFL adviser N Surendran said Prabu’s family had been informed of the latter’s imminent execution in a letter by the Singapore Prison Services on Oct 20. This gave them less than a week’s notice to prepare themselves, he added.

He also questioned the circumstances surrounding Prabu’s conviction, noting that the alleged drugs were found in a vehicle driven by another person.

He added that confessions obtained against Prabu and used by the prosecution at trial were made under duress, according to Prabu’s lawyers.

“On Oct 13, Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya assured Malaysians that the government would come up with a solution for Malaysians facing execution abroad.

“We now urge the Malaysian government to make urgent and strenuous efforts to save Prabu from the gallows this Friday,” he said.

Surendran also urged Singapore to halt Prabu’s execution and commute his sentence, saying the continued use of the death penalty for drug offences was a violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Singapore is a state party.

De facto law minister Liew Vui Keong previously said the Cabinet had agreed to abolish the death sentence with the bill to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat soon.

Under the proposed abolition of the death penalty, death row inmates will serve 30 years’ life imprisonment.
