Penang Wanita Umno chief Norliza Abd Rahim said the projects planned under PTMP involved risky and environmentally sensitive areas such as forest exploitation and marine fishing.
She said the landslides on Friday that killed foreign workers at Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong occurred almost a year after a similar disaster at the Tanjung Bungah construction site that killed 11 people.
“The status of PTMP now raises concerns among the people regarding safety aspects following the recurrence of the landslide tragedy in the state,” she said, adding that the state government was disregarding public concerns over PTMP.
PTMP is a RM46 billion state government initiative involving the construction of underwater tunnels connecting parts of the island and mainland, highways, light rail transit, monorail and bus connectivity.
The plan is financed through property development on three proposed man-made islands, known as the Southern Penang Reclamation Scheme (PSRR).
