KUALA LUMPUR:
Cartoonist Zunar today settled his lawsuit with the police and government over the seizure of more than 1,000 books and some 100 T-shirts at a fundraising event two years ago.

Lawyer Latheefa Koya told reporters that Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee SM Anwarul Haque, said he and the government had agreed to reach a settlement.

“The government agreed to pay an undisclosed amount of money to Zunar and will return the seized books and shirts,” she said after meeting High Court judge Su Geok Yiam.

Senior federal counsel Kamal Azira Hassan represented the police and government.

Zunar filed the suit last year, claiming the police had wrongfully seized 1,187 books and 103 T-shirts during the “Tea With Zunar” event on Dec 17, 2016, at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

He also claimed he was not given the reason for his arrest at the event.

He sought RM22,388 in special damages which he said was the cost of the seized books and shirts.

Police previously said Zunar was being investigated under Section 124C of the Penal Code for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Two individuals were charged at the Magistrate’s Court in January for allegedly obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duty at the event.

Freelancer Toong Ah Tea and activist Wong Chee Wai were accused of stopping police officer Gunalan Muniandy from conducting checks on the books exhibited at the event.
