EC chairman Azhar Harun said previously those wanting to find out the channel-specific results had to obtain them from the respective counting agents.
Speaking to FMT, he said the manual extraction of these channel-specific data was done by pundits and news organisations, in an attempt to tabulate results and make early predictions on who might win.
“Because prior to this, what happened was these pundits would collect the Form 14s to do their own calculations.
“By publishing this officially, we will get rid of calculation errors that might have arisen and pundits might get a more accurate picture of voting patterns,” Azhar said.
He said the move would go a long way to ensure transparency and at the same time dispel claims that voting data could be manipulated.
Checks by FMT showed the EC website published the voting numbers for every channel, with 172 pages on PDF, on the recently concluded Port Dickson parliamentary by-election.
Azhar said the next plan for the EC was to come up with a more natural search engine where people could search for election-related data easily.
“It will ensure that navigation to election areas will be much smoother and easier to access,” he said, adding the project was still a work in progress.
