Mohd Zaidi Di, 41, was charged under Section 44 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He faces a jail term of not less than three years and not exceeding 10 years, and a fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000, if convicted.

The 11.47am incident involving a trailer lorry and a car on the north-bound lane of the North-South Expressway after the Menora Tunnel resulted in the five car passengers, including a baby boy, burning to death.

The victims were Yew Poi Shy, 37; Teo Wee Tatt, 46; Shaw Swee Me, 42; Lee Len Ying, 60; and Yew Yi Chin, one.

Magistrate Noorhidayah Mohd Saad set Nov 9 for mention and ordered for Zaidi’s driving licence to be suspended.

Deputy public prosecutor Azhar Mokhtar appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.
