PETALING JAYA:
A source close to Baling MP Azeez Abd Rahim, who was also the former Tabung Haji chairman, has confirmed that he and his brother have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

He said the duo were expected to be brought to court tomorrow for remand.

The source said he was unaware of the charges being levelled at Azeez and his brother.

He told FMT that MACC was expected to throw more light on the case tomorrow.

Azeez was at MACC headquarters this morning for investigations and was believed to have been arrested around 11am. His brother, who is the general manager of a company, was picked up from his office in Sungai Buloh soon after.

On May 23, MACC had seized RM500,000 in cash from Azeez’s home over a probe into the appointment of contractors in Tabung Haji projects.

The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009, which deals with the solicitation of bribes and offering of gratification to another party in a transaction.

A MACC source said the case is also being probed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (Amla) 2001.

It was reported earlier that MACC had conducted raids at two locations, his houses in Subang and Baling as well as his office on Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Kuala Lumpur, on May 23.

Azeez said that part of the RM500,000 MACC took was to finance a mission to Gaza, Palestine, that he had planned.

Another portion of the money taken by MACC officers was meant for the Baling Umno division to be given to the constituents for Ramadan and Aidilfitri, he had said.

The mission to Gaza was planned for after the general election on May 9, he had told Bernama.

Azeez also said that besides the cash, the MACC officers also seized watches and some foreign currency.

“The MACC officers were very professional. I will extend my fullest cooperation to the MACC in carrying out its investigation,” he had said.
