KOTA KINABALU:
PKR’s president-elect Anwar Ibrahim has vowed to “baling” (throw) those responsible for the chair-throwing incident in Penang and the brawl in Kedah out of the party.

Speaking to Sabah members during its Malaysia Day celebration here today, he said investigations are ongoing and those found to be in the wrong would be expelled from the party.

“They think this is MIC… wrong party. MIC is famous for throwing chairs, so with MIC no more now, they’re the ones replacing to ‘baling kerusi’ (throw chairs).

“My answer is – those who ‘baling’ (throw) the chairs, we will ‘baling’ from the party,” he said to laughter and applause from the floor.

Anwar said order should have been maintained.

A heated argument had quickly turned into punches and chair-throwing at a press conference in Seberang Jaya, Penang, last night to update members on the polls.

A group of PKR members were upset when the party officials announced that the election results in Penang would stand despite complaints on alleged irregularities in its e-voting system.

Anwar also said that the party polls in Kedah have been suspended as there were weaknesses in the leadership style.

“We need to ensure the elections are clean,” he said, adding he didn’t want any discrepancies that could lead to further problems.

Complaints over irregularities in the voting system have led to a fracas in the Merbok PKR division, forcing polling in eight of the 15 divisions in Kedah to be suspended.

A total of 14 people have been arrested over the fracas in Kedah.

Anwar also warned that he would take action on members who used their positions to reward others in order to secure votes.

“Those with a little power, they try to secure votes (for example) ‘nah projek’ for you (here are projects for you). There are such things going on… I know, I hear about it.

“Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as president, dia ada baik sikit (she is a bit kinder). When I become president, those who do these things will face action,” he said to more applause from the crowd.

He also urged members not to resort to boycotting or insulting their rivals during the course of the party elections.

“What you do is explain your policies clearly.”

Speaking to reporters later, Anwar, who spent over 10 years in jail, also expressed his elation on his return to Sabah after some six years.

“I’m so happy to be back in Sabah. I had good meetings with the Sabah governor, chief minister, (deputy chief minister-cum-Sabah PKR chief) Christina Liew and the state party leadership,” he said.
