Unlike SST, GST ‘pau’ everything, Guan Eng tells Najib

Finance minister says former PM is indulging in economic hypocrisy and deception by complaining about taxes he had to pay at a shop in Perak.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng says the GST is worse than SST.
GEORGE TOWN:
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today called former prime minister Najib Razak a hypocrite for complaining over a 6% Sales and Services Tax (SST) he had to pay on “kaya pau” (buns) and drinks he bought at a shop in Tanjung Malim, Perak, recently.

Lim said when Najib introduced the 6% Goods and Services Tax which applied to all products and services, he appeared to have no complaints about the taxes.

Najib posted a receipt on Twitter yesterday which showed RM3.80 was charged for SST on a purchase of undisclosed quantities of pau and drinks worth RM63.40. He said the shop was not big enough to be charging SST.

“I hear the former finance minister (Najib) went to buy kaya pau, he asked why must pay SST. I’m surprised because when the GST was imposed, he never complained.

“Why didn’t you complain then but now you complain? We hope Najib will not try to be a hero now, as during his time, it was worse.

“I would describe what he is doing now as economic hypocrisy and deception. It also shows he wants the GST back. That is what the Barisan Nasional is all about,” Lim said today.

He said during Najib’s administration, all shops recording a total revenue of RM500,000 would have to pay a GST of 6%.

Lim said following the removal of the GST, the government was now imposing a 6% SST on outlets earning more than RM1.5 million.

“This is RM1.5 million in total revenue, not just profit alone. On top of that, we excluded cigarettes and tax on rent from small warung (stalls).

“If it was the GST, they ‘pau kaliau’ or sapu habis, because everyone would have to pay up.”
