Sunway to build Seberang Perai’s largest private hospital

The RM400 million facility will be a teaching hospital and will employ more than 600 health care professionals, including 60 medical specialists.

A RM400 million private hospital will be built in Perai here by the Sunway Group, as part of its RM1 billion plan to invest in more hospitals across the country.

The 180-bed Sunway Medical Centre in Seberang Jaya will be completed by 2020.

It can be expanded to 350 beds in the future, which will likely make it the largest private hospital in Seberang Perai.

The tertiary referral hospital will also be a teaching hospital, with more than 600 health care professionals, including 60 medical specialists.

Today, the hospital’s ground-breaking ceremony was performed by Sunway Group founder and chairman Jeffrey Cheah and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at a vacant plot next to the Sunway Hotel on Lebuh Tenggiri 2.

Cheah said the hospital will serve a growing population in Seberang Perai that is forecast to exceed 1.1 million by 2020.

Meanwhile, Chow said the hospital will boost the medical tourism industry in the state.

He hoped Sunway would also bring the Sunway University and Monash University campuses to Penang as well.

The Penang Sunway Medical Centre will be the group’s third hospital after the one in Petaling Jaya, established some 20 years ago, and the one recently opened in Sunway Velocity, Cheras.

After Penang, it plans to open more hospitals in the next five years in Cheras (Kuala Lumpur), Kota Damansara (Petaling Jaya), Ipoh, and Iskandar (Johor).
