Utusan to publish full apology to Anwar as part of suit settlement

It follows a similar settlement by TV3 last week.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd today agreed to settle a defamation suit filed by Anwar Ibrahim against the newspaper company and two others.

This was decided after the case management before Judicial Commissioner Faizah Jamaludin in her chambers, in the presence of lawyers Sangeet Kaur Deo, Azhar Arman Ali and Lim Qi Si who represented Anwar, Utusan and TV3 respectively.

Last week, Mazlan Ismail, Barisan Nasional’s candidate for Permatang Pauh who stood against Anwar in the 13th general election and TV3 agreed to settle the suit.

“My client will also issue an apology to the plaintiff (Anwar). The apology will be published in the Utusan Malaysia newspaper, but the date has yet to be determined,” said Azhar, adding that the court has set Sept 28 to record the settlement.

Utusan is the third defendant in the suit filed by Anwar in 2015, over remarks he said had implicated him of bribing judges and prosecutors.

Anwar claimed that Mazlan uttered defamatory words during a press conference, which were later published by TV3 on its Buletin Utama news programme on Aug 2, 2013 and on Utusan Malaysia the following day.

Anwar said the words implied that he was unethical, dishonest, immoral and a liar.

He is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages and injunction to stop the defendant from repeating or re-publishing the defamatory words.
