PETALING JAYA:
PKR’s Gurun assemblyman and Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul said he never stated that he wanted the Kedah menteri besar post should Anwar Ibrahim become prime minister.

He said PPBM misinterpreted his remark about giving up his MP seat for Anwar to contest.

Johari clarified that he only said his state constituency was certain to benefit from increased development if PKR’s incoming president was elected Sungai Petani MP and became the prime minister.

“Surely I will receive many benefits if the MP of my area is the prime minister, to help me develop Gurun and Sungai Petani.

“That is all I said, no connection to the menteri besar post,” he added.

The Gurun seat is part of the Sungai Petani parliamentary constituency.

Johari has stated his readiness to give up Sungai Petani to enable Anwar to stand there and return to the Dewan Rakyat.

The four Pakatan Harapan component parties have agreed for Anwar to take over as the 8th prime minister once PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad steps down from the post.

Johari’s clarification was in response to criticism by Kedah PPBM deputy chairman Anuar Abdul Hamid who questioned whether PKR was planning to wrest the menteri besar’s post now held by PPBM’s Mukhriz Mahathir.

“I interpret Johari’s statement to mean that if Anwar became the prime minister, there would be a reshuffle of the menteri besar and exco in Kedah. Johari, who offered his MP seat to Anwar, will be rewarded by being appointed menteri besar,” said Anuar.

Johari said his clarification should end the issue and he did not wish to prolong it.

“He (Anuar) is my friend and he perhaps misunderstood. Never mind,” he said.
