KOTA KINABALU:
The Sabah government will ensure that it gets the “best deal” out of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), says Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal today.

He said the state government would ensure the devolution of powers from the federal government.

It would also ensure that the 20% oil royalty announced recently by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad would be one of the main priorities.

“The oil royalty payments must be aligned to the promise made in the (election) manifesto.

“Therefore, the state government will ensure that Sabah gets ‘the best deal’ as provided for in MA63,” he said when replying to a question from Jahid Jahim (PBS-Tamparuli) at the state legislative assembly.

Shafie also spoke of the setting up of the Ministry of Law and Native Affairs, Ministry of Education and Innovation, and Ministry of Health and People’s Wellbeing in the state.

He said this showed the commitment of the new state government in implementing its responsibilities with regards to legislation, especially those related to native affairs and empowering the state government in health and education matters.

Shafie also mentioned the demands of the state government in line with the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC), MA63 and the Federal Constitution.

It included requesting a revision of the oil and gas revenue due to Sabah, a review of an increase in petroleum cash payments, and “Borneonisation” where about 90% of the federal departments and agencies in Sabah should be led by Sabahans.

Shafie is heading a special committee set up by the state government which will look into the state’s demands in accordance with MA63.
