Khazanah appoints EPF chief Shahril as MD

He replaces Azman Mokhtar who resigned along with eight other directors last month.

PETALING JAYA:
Sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional has appointed Employees Provident Fund (EPF) CEO Shahril Ridza Ridzuan as managing director, replacing Azman Mokhtar who resigned along with eight other directors last month.

He is scheduled to report for duty on Aug 20.

Shahril was widely expected to take over from Azman, whose resignation came weeks after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticised Khazanah for deviating from its original purpose of helping Bumiputeras.

On July 30, the Prime Minister’s Office announced Mahathir as the new chairman of the sovereign wealth fund, with Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, former Petronas president Mohd Hassan Marican, former Bank Negara deputy governor Sukhdave Singh and former Securities Commission executive director Goh Ching Yin named as directors.

Shahril, 48, was managing director of Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) prior to joining EPF.

He is presently a non-executive board member of Media Prima Bhd, Malaysia Building Society Bhd, Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Bhd, MRCB and IJN Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Azman took charge of Khazanah in 2004, and modelled the fund on the lines of Temasek, boosting corporate governance at public sector monopolies and driving big restructuring at some firms.

The fund also invested in real estate projects, technology and logistics sectors, while opening worldwide offices. Under Azman, its offshore investments grew to represent about 44.5% of its realisable asset value by geographical exposure.
