Speaking after a ceramah for the Sungai Kandis by-election, the Rembau MP defended Khazanah’s record under its former managing director, Azman Mokhtar.
He said the fund increased its net worth assets during Azman’s 14-year tenure.
“I don’t believe Khazanah strayed from its course. To me, that (question) doesn’t arise.”
He was responding to Mahathir’s statement that there was nothing wrong with him being Khazanah chairman.
Earlier today, Mahathir said it was his duty to put Khazanah back on track, given that he founded the fund during his first stint as prime minister.
Khairy also questioned why Mahathir was the one who decided that he should be chairman when Khazanah was owned by Ministry of Finance Incorporated.
“So in terms of governance, it doesn’t seem right.”
‘Deliver on promises’
In his speech at Kampung Bukit Naga tonight, Khairy slammed PH for making all sorts of promises it couldn’t deliver.
“The most popular excuse is the national debt. We left behind a government that was praised by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The economy we left behind was stable.”
He said although a victory in Sungai Kandis wouldn’t change the government, it was important to have a strong opposition in Selangor, which only has five opposition assemblymen.
He said PH itself had noted the importance of having a strong opposition and if there was no strong opposition, the government would forget its promises.
“Every day, in the Dewan Rakyat, we pressure them to honour their promises,” Khairy said, adding that having a strong opposition was also important to fight for national issues and prevent the introduction of policies which were not in line with national aspirations, like recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
