PETALING JAYA:
The Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMM), which was formed to portray Malaysia’s moderate image overseas, has been instructed to cease operations effective July 31.

In a brief statement, its CEO and executive chairman Nasharudin Mat Isa thanked those who had supported it since its inception.

“In complying with the directive given, the foundation wishes to take this opportunity to extend its gratitude to all – individuals, institutions, CSOs, diplomatic missions and the media fraternity – for the support and advocacy received throughout GMMF’s existence in promoting the voices and agenda of moderation,” he said.

GMM was launched in 2012 by then-prime minister Najib Razak. A year later, former deputy higher education minister Saifuddin Abdullah was appointed as its CEO.

The government appointed Nasharudin to replace Saifuddin in 2015 following the latter’s resignation from Umno.

GMM had come under criticism by those who said it failed to speak out against intolerance practised by religious authorities under the previous government.

Nasharudin, who is former PAS deputy president, was also criticised over GMM’s failure to speak out against Malaysia’s drift to conservative Islam.
