The standoff, which took place in front of the Komtar administrative complex, lasted some 20 minutes, with personnel from the Light Strike Force creating a buffer zone to prevent both groups from getting too close with each other.
Police had to step in to warn protesters not to provoke each other.
Scores of people representing Muslim groups had marched from the Masjid Jamek Simpang Enam to Komtar, and handed over memorandums to a representative from Ramasamy’s office.
In his memorandum, Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) representative Muhammad Yusuf Azim urged Ramasamy to resign, and for police to investigate him without fear or favour.
Earlier, a pro-Ramasamy group gathered to show support for the DAP leader.
Ramasamy has been targeted by several Muslim activists, including Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, in the wake of the controversy over the government’s handling of Dr Zakir Naik, the Indian Muslim preacher wanted by New Delhi over allegations of terrorism.
He recently denied any links with the Tamil Tigers after a picture of him taking part in a meeting involving the LTTE Constitutional Affairs Committee appeared on social media. Ramasamy had said the committee was set up by the Sri Lankan government in the aftermath of a peace agreement reached between Colombo and the Tamil Tigers.
Another picture has surfaced online, showing Ramasamy paying respects to an image of combat rifle. Police said they have begun an investigation based on the reports against him.
