PAS wants Penang DCM probed for links to Tamil Tigers

This follows circulation of a picture of P Ramasamy allegedly paying his respects to a symbol of the armed group, as well as his hosting of a pro-LTTE politician from India.

PETALING JAYA:
PAS has called for an investigation into a Penang DAP leader over his possible links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the armed group behind a decades-old civil war in Sri Lanka, after the circulation of pictures allegedly showing his loyalty to the organisation which has been labelled a terrorist organisation.

PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan said police must investigate photos showing Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy paying his respects to a picture of a Kalashnikov rifle, as well as his hosting of an Indian politician who is sympathetic to the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka.

Nasrudin was referring to a recent visit to Penang by V Gopalasamy, better known as Vaiko, who leads Tamil Nadu-based party Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), to attend the wedding of Ramasamy’s son.

PAS said Vaiko had been barred from entering Malaysia.

“A thorough investigation must be made on him and other individuals.

“Furthermore, he (Ramasamy) is a DAP member who holds a senior position in Penang and his position could have influence on crucial matters,” said Nasrudin.

Ramasamy has been targeted by several Muslim activists, including Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, in the wake of the controversy over the government’s handling of Dr Zakir Naik, the Indian Muslim preacher wanted by New Delhi over allegations of terrorism.

He recently denied any links with the Tamil Tigers after a picture of him taking part in a meeting involving the LTTE Constitutional Affairs Committee appeared on social media.

He said the committee was set up by the Sri Lankan government in the aftermath of a peace agreement reached between Colombo and the Tamil Tigers, adding that he had also been invited to join peace committees in strife-torn Aceh.
