Zeti: Asian economy to remain resilient amid ongoing trade war

The former Bank Negara Malaysia governor is confident the region's economy will be able to withstand the impact from the trade war between the US and China.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz today said she was confident that the Asian economy, including Malaysia’s, would remain resilient amid the ongoing trade war between the US and China.

Commenting on the escalating trade conflict where the US, in its latest move, has threatened to impose fresh tariffs on another US$200 billion of Chinese goods, she said the global trade war between the US and China would not benefit anyone.

“But I believe in the resilience of the Asian economy and we will demonstrate this resilience going forward,” she said after meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons at Menara Ilham here today.

The office of the US Trade Representatives has released a new round of proposed tariffs, listing 200 pages of items valued at US$200 billion which include baseball gloves, handbags and digital cameras.

This latest move came just two days after US$34 billion in duties on goods and services came into effect.

Beijing has vowed to retaliate to the imposition of fresh tariffs by Washington.
