AMPANG:
Fugitive Red Shirt leader Jamal Yunos, who has been in hiding from the authorities since May, is at the Magistrate’s Court here to face a criminal charge of escaping from custody.

He reached the Ampang court complex at around 4pm, after being escorted back from Indonesia today.

He was arrested by Indonesian police on Monday.

Before going into hiding, Jamal was charged with causing a public nuisance under Section 290 of the Penal Code for smashing beer bottles in front of the Selangor state building last year. He was charged in a hospital in Ampang.

However, he left the hospital without completing his bail process.

Selangor criminal investigation chief Fadzil Ahmat today said the public prosecutor’s office would press charges on the Sungai Besar Umno division chief under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from custody.

The authorities previously announced that Jamal had escaped to Indonesia using illegal channels.

Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun said he had contacted his Indonesian counterpart to help track down Jamal.

Jamal however claimed he had never left Malaysia, saying there was no need for the police to seek Interpol’s help to track him down.
