“Yes, the news is true,” Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga told FMT, adding that a report would be submitted to the tourism, culture and environment ministry.
He said the calf died last month while an adolescent elephant, which was rescued by the department years ago, died recently.
Tuuga, however, did not divulge the cause of death of the two elephants although it was understood that the calf had been ill.
Recently, the park came under scrutiny after FMT published a report about alleged mistreatment of the animals there, including the elephants.
Photos received by FMT showed that the elephants staying in the park were chained because the small enclosure where they were allowed to roam was under construction.
SWD has given the assurance that the construction will be completed by next month.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew, who visited the park last week, said she was satisfied with the conditions of the animals at the park but admitted it needed more funding to improve the facilities.
Sabah has less than 2,000 pygmy elephants left in captivity and in the wild.
Between April and May this year, six elephants were slaughtered and as in many cases before, investigations were inconclusive.
The deaths of the pachyderms led Chief Minister Shafie Apdal to call on wildlife officials to investigate the cause of death and to fast-track all necessary efforts to protect the endangered wildlife.
