PETALING JAYA:
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar is to head a committee to strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the country.

Education Minister Maszlee Malik, in a statement today, said the committee will prepare a report to upgrade TVET.

“Nurul Izzah is someone who cares a lot about TVET.

“We have discussed how TVET can help the youths, not only to get jobs but become entrepreneurs as well,” Maszlee said.

He also said the Pakatan Harapan government was aware how important technical and vocational training was and it had also been included in the PH manifesto for the 14th general election.

It was committed to upgrading the training to world-class standards, instead of it being just a second option for school-leavers.

In January this year, then human resources minister Richard Riot had announced that a TVET Council would be established soon with prime minister Najib Razak as the chair.

He had chaired the first TVET Malaysia ministerial coordination meeting involving seven ministries and said the council would coordinate government agendas in catapulting TVET in Malaysia.

He said the Human Capital Council, under the Economic Planning Unit, played a role in planning the development and management of human resources.

The council was expected to help raise the percentage of skilled workers in the country to 35% in 2020 compared with the existing 28%.

Lim Kok Wing, who was the first international president of TVET UK, was also appointed TVET Malaysia adviser.
