Malaysia Airlines denies waiving excess luggage fee for Najib, family

The national carrier also says it is investigating the source of the screenshots that went viral on social media.

PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia Airlines has denied it waived a whopping RM17,000 charge for 535kg in excess luggage when former Prime Minister Najib Razak and his family travelled to Langkawi recently.

The airline issued a statement after screenshots of what was believed to be the national carrier’s ticketing system made the rounds on social media.

The national carrier explained that when passengers checked-in as a group, all baggage may be combined and tagged under one name, which would appear on the system as excess baggage.

It also said that the group’s total checked-in baggage was well within the allowable limit.

“Malaysia Airlines observes a strict policy on excess baggage and can confirm that no waivers were given.”

Najib and his family, including his wife Rosmah Mansor, had a brief holiday in Pulau Langkawi from June 16 to the 20th.

The airline also said it viewed the leak of the details seriously and is investigating the source of these screenshots.
