Wan Agyl Wan Hassan said as part of the cleansing process, everyone in Umno should be allowed to vote for leaders.
“During elections, there is money politics. The present system only allows delegates to vote.
“It becomes easier for leaders to control.
“All members should be allowed to vote,” he said during an Astro Awani talk show.
He suggested to strengthen Umno branches and get in touch with grassroots through creative and innovative engagements.
“People join Umno as they see it as a way to make money. But the ideology is to provide community service.”
He said youths should be brave to voice out changes within the party, such as limiting the terms of leaders.
Another candidate, Khairul Azwan Harun, said money politics was widespread in Umno. “That is the disease,” he said.
He said Umno should do away with the system of leaders endorsing candidates. “It creates the ‘kow tow’ mentality to get endorsements from a leader.”
He added that those who voice out against leaders must not be sacked.
He was asked to respond on Pakatan Harapan leaders voicing out their opinions in the open on their disagreements with decisions made.
Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki, a former Umno deputy minister, said leaders should declare their assets.
“The rakyat has the perception that we (in Umno) are synonymous with corruption. We need to be credible,” said Ashraf.
He hoped Umno members would be brave to speak out and act as a strong opposition within the party to carry out checks and balances.
He said Pakatan Harapan members spoke out against the government because they had nothing to lose.
Mohd Shahar Abdullah, who is also eyeing the Umno Youth chief post, hopes Umno would become a good and credible opposition.
