KUALA LUMPUR:
Britain will support Malaysia in recovering any money believed to have been misappropriated from 1MDB, British High Commissioner Vicki Treadell said today.

However, both countries must follow the rule of law in recovering 1MDB money, she said after a meeting with the prime minister’s top adviser Daim Zainuddin today.

“We had a very broad discussion, and it is all about the new agenda, where Britain can help and support the new government to deliver its reform agenda,” she told reporters.

Last week, reports were lodged with New Scotland Yard, home of the Metropolitan Police, calling for investigations into British companies and several Britons, in connection with a US$1 billion investment deal between 1MDB and PetroSaudi International.

On Tuesday, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim met Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, in London and said the British government would support investigations into the 1MDB corruption scandal and repatriation of 1MDB assets seized in UK.

Anwar had also said the new federal government would also investigate a large property development deal to purchase the Battersea Power Station site next to the Thames river by government-linked agencies. The deal, at £1.6 billion, is the largest in the UK.
