‘Extravagant’ Melaka CM’s official residence now a tourist draw

Tour buses bring droves of foreign tourists to view Seri Bendahara built by the previous state administration.

PETALING JAYA:
Sri Bendahara, the Melaka Chief Minister’s massive official residence built by the previous state administration, has become a tourist draw, even attracting tourists from China.

A local FMT reader who visited the home, which was opened for public viewing by new Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari after the May 9 polls, said as many as 15 tour buses were there this morning.

“There were easily more than a hundred people at the home today. From their accent, they sounded like they were from China, while others could be heard speaking Thai,” he said.

It has been reported that Seri Bendahara would be open to the public for a month from May 14.

The idea was to show to the public the extravagance of the previous administration. The residence has a water feature, centralised air-conditioning, swimming pool, and a huge garage, among others.

Adly had claimed that the electricity bill for Seri Bendahara ran as high as RM45,000 a month.

Adly said the government might make Seri Bendahara a tourist destination, as it has attracted around 10,000 visitors since it was opened to the public.

Melaka PAS chief Kamarudin Sidek recently called for firm guidelines for visitors to Seri Bendahara following complaints of damage to the furniture and other facilities at the residence caused by irresponsible visitors.
