“Although the amount for opposition MPs is lower than that given to our PH colleagues, it is better than what BN practised previously when we did not give anything to opposition representatives,” the former youth and sports minister wrote on Facebook.
However, the Rembau MP hoped PH would consider giving an equal amount to BN and PH representatives in future by implementing an audit and monitoring system to prevent leakages.
“In the spirit of the New Malaysia, voters should not be punished for making a different political choice in elections.
“To ensure there are no leakages in the distribution of allocations, strict conditions could be imposed and a transparent system put in place to monitor and audit allocations to all MPs.”
Mahathir announced the annual MP allocations of RM500,000 for PH representatives and RM100,000 for opposition MPs after the weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday.
He also said RM200,000 would be allocated for MPs to operate their service centres, but it was unclear if this sum would be extended to opposition lawmakers as well.
The allocations would be given before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
On another matter, Khairy proposed that BN set up a shadow Cabinet to perform a check-and-balance role on the PH government.
