PETALING JAYA:
Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos claims he is still in Malaysia and there is no need for the authorities to involve foreign authorities, including Interpol, to look for him.

“I am still in the country, and the Immigration Department director-general has said I have not been detected leaving the country.

“I have no issues with wherever they want to say I am, but most importantly, I am not breaking any laws,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian today.

Jamal’s remarks were recorded in a WhatsApp voice message, which was circulated on the application.

He also said that his alleged offences were minor and did not warrant such efforts.

“It was only a small crime, what I did, such as protesting the beer festival by breaking beer bottles in front of the state secretariat building using a hammer, where the punishment is only a fine not exceeding RM400.

“Meanwhile, the other crimes for example, for holding an illegal gathering, I can only be fined RM100,” he said.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had said Malaysian police were working with Indonesian authorities to track down Jamal who was believed to have fled to the republic.

He also rejected Jamal’s appeal to him for protection.

“What is there to protect? He knows he has committed an offence, and then he ran away. I leave it to the authorities.

“If he is guilty, action should be taken and he should face the law,” Muhyiddin had said.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said a warrant of arrest had been issued for Jamal.

Jamal went missing from the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for back pain, a few hours after he was charged there before a magistrate. He pleaded not guilty to three charges and was allowed bail of RM3,000 for each.

One of the charges alleged he had caused a public nuisance by smashing beer bottles in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam last year.
