KOTA KINABALU:
A defiant national Umno Wanita leader insists that not all is grim for the party despite a poor election showing, pointing out now was a time for self-reflection for the Malay-based party to get back on track.

Umno Wanita vice-chief Azizah Mohd Dun also said the women’s wing in Sabah remained strong and united despite the resignation of Sabah Umno Wanita chief Armani Mahiruddin, who has pledged loyalty to Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal.

Speaking during a buka puasa with Sabah Umno women divisional chiefs at her Likas residence here yesterday, the Beaufort MP said the women’s wing would not easily give in.

“Our struggles today are actually for our next generation. We will remain with a heart of steel and will continue to be close to the rakyat… our spirit will not be weak,” she said.

Among those who attended the buka puasa were Sabah Umno Wanita vice-chief Jainab Ahmad, Papar chief Dayang Ainun Pengiran Bagul, Sipitang chief Surinam Sadikun, Kota Kinabalu chief Rosimah Zakaria and Keningau head Amelia Anjun.

“Sabah Umno Wanita is still strong, firm and united despite the government being spearheaded by Pakatan Harapan now.

“We will be a stout opposition in voicing issues that need attention.”

Azizah said the Sabah women’s wing should fight on for Umno, which had always defended issues pertaining to Islam, the Malay community and the country.

“We still have a lot of advantages but we have to look back where our mistakes were. The people have given the ‘signal’ to reject us but that is not the end.

“The electorate has allowed us time for self-reflection,” she said.

As such, she urged the women, Puteri and youth wings to continuously keep abreast of grassroots issues to win over the hearts of the younger generation.

“I hope Umno members will not give up because of the party’s fall. Win or lose, that’s normal.

“We must have faith that unity will bring us victory in the future,” Azizah said.
