
The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, was quoted as saying the meeting was for the Rulers to deliberate on the termination of service of the current Attorney-General and the appointment of a replacement.
In a statement quoted by NST Online, Syed Danial described the situation as an “impasse” for lack of agreement between the federal government and Istana Negara.
The Attorney-General is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the prime minister and serves at His Majesty’s pleasure.
Earlier today, former federal court judge Gopal Sri Ram had suggested that the prime minister should have submitted his nomination to the Conference of Rulers, who could then advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He said the advice must be followed.
A public outcry has arisen about the reported nomination of constitutional expert Tommy Thomas as a successor to Mohamad Apandi Ali, who has been instructed by the government to take 30 days’ unrecorded leave.
“The Malay Rulers have been following this development and consider it their responsibility to help resolve this impasse,” Syed Danial was quoted as saying.
