Rayer, who is a lawyer, said if the allegations were found to be true, the person should face the council’s Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board (ASDB).
Today, the Penang police revealed that they had arrested a lawyer on Friday for allegedly intimidating a deputy public prosecutor (DPP) after losing a case.
A source told FMT the lawyer had said something “threatening” against the DPP to his client. The DPP has then lodged a police report.
Rayer said lawyers often got into shouting matches in court but kept it within the strict confines of legal argument.
He said if a lawyer could make such threatening remarks, then the person was not fit to be a lawyer.
Rayer said the council, through the ASDB, must commence a probe on the lawyer without waiting for the DPP to lodge a complaint.
“If what the lawyer did was found to be true, then we must reprimand the lawyer severely. Better yet, bar him from practice as a deterrent to others who might do the same.
“We must weed out questionable characters from the Bar so as to uphold the good name of the legal fraternity,” he told FMT.
Meanwhile, the Penang Bar Committee chief T Tharuma told FMT that disciplinary action would commence if there was a proven case by the investigating authorities.
Police had said an investigation paper into the case had been submitted to the public prosecutor’s office for further action.
