Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the sum was an increase of 8% from RM78,300, in the last two years since Mavcom was formed in 2016.
“That’s more than the prime minister’s basic salary of RM20,000 plus a month,” said Transport Minister, Anthony Loke.
He said at the Cabinet meeting today, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad agreed to review salaries of all chairman of commissions, government-linked companies and statutory bodies.
Mavcom has come under fire recently over its RM1 levy since early this month. The levy is also added to airline ticket prices.
Its operational budget was also the subject of a Facebook campaign called “Move Against Mavcom”, questioning the annual allocation of some RM25 million for an organisation with 59 employees.
But Loke said the government has no plans to abolish Mavcom pending a review.
Loke said Mavcom, which was set up in 2016, had an initial funding of RM90 million, and had since been self-funding its operations.
He said he was informed that Mavcom’s operational cost was RM25 million.
