Scrap Global Movement of Moderates, says former boss

PH secretary-general Saifuddin Abdullah says the government-linked body to combat extremism should be closed down.

PETALING JAYA:
The former head of the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) has called for an end to the government-linked body, set up during Najib Razak’s time to combat extremism and promote moderation.

“It should be closed,” Saifuddin Abdullah said in a brief response to FMT, refusing to elaborate further.

Saifuddin was replaced as CEO of GMM by former PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa in 2015, soon after defecting from Umno to PKR.

Saifuddin, who is now secretary-general of Pakatan Harapan, had expressed unhappiness with Umno and doubts over Najib’s credentials as a moderate.

Najib first mooted the idea of the GMM during the 65th United Nations general assembly on Sept 27, 2010.

In January 2012, the International Conference on the Global Movement of Moderates was held in Kuala Lumpur. In his keynote address at the conference, Najib announced the establishment of the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation, to consolidate and circulate information to promote moderation and fight against extremism.
