Speaking to FMT, he said that the three are: three-term assemblymen Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei (Sungai Kandis) and Amirudin Shari (Sungai Tua); and two-term assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad (Ijok).
“They are the only ones in contention as they are senior leaders having served at least two terms as assemblymen,” according to the PKR source.
He dismissed rumours that PKR vice-president Shaharuddin Baharuddin was also in contention.
Amirudin and Shuhaimi are widely seen as close allies of Azmin, who is PKR deputy president.
Amirudin is the state executive councillor for Youth Development, Sports, Cultural and Entrepreneurship, while Shuhaimi is Azmin’s political secretary.
However, in 2014, Idris had been considered to be a potential menteri besar, during the time of the Kajang Move crisis when PKR sought to replace Khalid Ibrahim as menteri besar.
Idris had been touted as a “compromise” candidate for those torn between Azmin and party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, then the assembly member for Kajang. It is understood that this idea was rejected by DAP and PAS who were part of the Pakatan Rakyat state government then.
Idris, a gynaecologist, hails from Ijok. He is married with four children. Johor-born Amiruddin has been with PKR since 2004. He is a former manager of the Selangor Football Association. Perak-born Shuhaimi is a former senior production manager.
Azmin has gone to Putrajaya for discussions with prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad after being caught by surprise yesterday when he was named to be minister for economic affairs in Mahathir’s incoming Cabinet.
He will need to decide whether to remain as menteri besar or become a Cabinet minister. Azmin is both MP for Gombak and state assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa.
