Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali met Dr Mahathir Mohamad today to discuss the scope of the new ministerial position.
PUTRAJAYA:
Azmin Ali said today he would review all mega projects approved by the previous government if he were to accept a Cabinet post as Minister for Economic Affairs.

Priority would be given to projects which would benefit the people directly, such as water supply and public housing, where the Selangor state government had the expertise and experience, he said, Bernama reported.

Azmin, who is Selangor Menteri Besar, was among nine people named yesterday to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s incoming 15-member Cabinet.

He had an hour-long meeting with the prime minister for discussions about the position and said he would consider the possible effects on the stability of the state government and the people’s trust if he is to step down as menteri besar to become a Cabinet minister.

He said Mahathir gave him a detailed picture of what was expected of him in the ministerial position. Dr Mahathir said he was wanted to assist in planning national policies and strategies to strengthen the economy, according to the Bernama report.

Azmin said he would seek an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to brief him about the Cabinet post before making a decision about his position.

“An explanation on the latest development to the Sultan of Selangor is very important as it involves the post of Menteri Besar and any changes should be done in order and in an orderly manner,” he told reporters after the meeting with Mahathir at the Perdana Leadership Foundation.
