Welcoming the new government’s move, TI-M said evidence related to the sovereign wealth fund’s overseas transactions should be obtained through mutual assistance from the financial institutions of the countries where the money was suspected to have been channeled.
It said the findings from the Auditor-General’s report could also be used in investigations by the relevant enforcement agencies.
TI-M said it had opposed the move by the Najib administration to classify the report under the Official Secrets Act 1972.
“Those involved in this scandal despite their positions should be brought to justice and face the consequences in accordance of the rule of law,” it said.
TI-M added that the declassification would allow people to know the actual findings of the report and everyone implicated in it.
“The scandal has also affected the image of Malaysia and is one of the causes for Malaysia’s position to drop in TI’s Corruption Perception Index ever since the case was investigated,” it said.
Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali, reportedly dismissed by Mahathir today, had last year cleared then prime minister Najib Razak of any offences pertaining to the RM2.6 billion donation from a Saudi royal family and the RM42 million from 1MDB subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd deposited into his personal accounts.
