JOHOR BAHRU:
Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Mohamed Khaled Nordin today advised voters to back the coalition’s candidates for Muar and Bakri to ensure continued development in the state.

He highlighted in particular the government’s plans to turn Bakri and Muar into a furniture hub, saying this was just the start.

“If you don’t vote for BN’s Bakri and Muar candidates, it means you don’t agree with the plans that we have to develop a furniture hub,” he said, adding that the government hoped to consolidate the furniture industry in the two areas in the near future.

Speaking at a ceremony to hand over offer letters for affordable homes in Taman Bakri Setia, he said the furniture hub would create more jobs.

“We must not let this chance for development go, otherwise we will be overtaken by Singapore and Indonesia.

“To do that, you must vote for the right people. Vote for the BN candidates. Don’t vote for the other side who only make promises but cannot fulfil them.”

Khaled added that more plans for affordable housing were underway, and that the state government would be aggressively acquiring more land for affordable homes throughout Johor.

“The state has allocated RM100 million for the purpose of acquiring 121 hectares of land statewide, except Muar as there is a shortage of land there.

“But in Muar, with cooperation by private sectors, we hope to build 2,000 units of affordable homes,” he said, adding that the acquiring process had already begun.

Expensive houses however would remain relevant, he said, as the rich would start buying up affordable homes if there was no expensive housing.

“If there are no expensive homes, how are we going to offer subsidies?

“For example, if a house is worth RM100,000, the subsidies the government can offer could lower it to RM80,000.”

He said no other state had been able to offer affordable housing at such a rate, not even Penang or Selangor.

When met after the ceremony, Khaled questioned the opposition’s ability to make good on its promises.

“They can say what they want, but do they understand the issues and problems here?

“I hope the voters of Bakri and Muar will not jeopardise these development plans,” he said.

PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is contesting in Muar, had earlier promised to build 1,000 affordable homes in the constituency.
