GEORGE TOWN:
DAP today announced that Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari will contest the Tanjung Bungah state seat currently held by Teh Yee Cheu in the May 9 election.

Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow added that newcomer and city councillor Chris Lee Chun Kit would be fielded in the Pulau Tikus state seat.

This followed the announcement by DAP’s Pulau Tikus incumbent Yap Soo Huey that she intended to take a sabbatical to complete her masters degree.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, meanwhile, will defend his Air Putih state seat for a third term.

The other state seat in Bukit Bendera, Kebun Bunga, is held by PKR’s Cheah Kah Peng. The party has yet to announce its candidate there for the coming election.

Teh, who recently quit DAP, will contest the Sungai Pinang state seat under the Parti Sosialis Malaysia banner.

There are currently 71,767 voters in Bukit Bendera. Kebun Bunga has the most voters at 21,064, followed by Tanjung Bungah at 20,126, Pulau Tikus at 17,825 and Air Putih at 12,752.

In the 2013 general election, there were 71,085 voters, the majority of whom were Chinese (74%), followed by Malays (14%) and Indians (11%).
