KUALA LUMPUR:
An Indian national was among three people detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday in connection with the issuance of accreditation certificates from several private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) in the country.

The three suspects, aged between 30 and 34, were detained at about 4pm in a raid around Jalan Ipoh here.

According to a MACC source, the three suspects were believed to be middle-men who handled the sale of the fake certificates.

“An investigation is being conducted to identify the person responsible for printing the certificates,” the source said when contacted by Bernama.

He also said the syndicate was believed to have issued fake diploma and degree certificates.

“They took only a week to produce the fake certificates using local private institutions of higher learning in the country which could be bought for between RM2,000 and RM16,000,” he said.

He added that investigations are ongoing to determine if any inside people at the IPTS were involved.

When contacted, MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed the three arrests.

He said they would be brought to a court in Putrajaya to obtain a remand order.
