Big guns from 3 Malay parties to clash in Pasir Puteh

Local boy and PPBM information chief Kamarudin Mohd Noor is set to face PAS and BN candidates in GE14.

PETALING JAYA:
Voters in the Pasir Puteh parliamentary seat in Kelantan will see a clash of three personalities from PAS, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 14th general election (GE14), sources say.

PAS is expected to field Nik Zawawi Salleh, who is secretary of the party’s Syura Council, while PH will likely nominate PPBM information chief Kamarudin Mohd Noor.

BN meanwhile is likely to introduce Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ashraf Wajdi Ahmad Dasuki.

The seat has been held by candidates from the Islamist party since 1999.

In the 13th general election, PAS’ Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad defeated BN’s Tuan Mustaffa Tuan Mat by 1,888 votes.

A PPBM source said Kamarudin, who is a former Pasir Puteh Umno division chief, had the edge this time around despite his previous losses there in 1990 and 1999.

“He is the only one who is from Pasir Puteh, whereas the other two rival candidates are outsiders,” the source told FMT.

Kamaruddin, 70, switched to PPBM two years ago in support of former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin who was sacked from the cabinet, and later from Umno, in 2016.

Nik Zawawi hails from Besut in neighbouring Terengganu while Ashraf is from Tumpat, Kelantan.
