The man, a sergeant at the Labuan Correctional Centre (prison) died at Labuan Nucleus hospital emergency ward at 9.10pm.
Labuan police chief Supt Mohamad Farid Ahmad said the man had slashed his own neck. He was admitted at about 6pm, after being persuaded to surrender.
His wife, 45, is in critical condition while the son, 23, was discharged after receiving treatment.
It was believed the sergeant had become agitated over marital problems and stabbed his wife in the stomach, shoulders and legs about 3pm. His son, who struggled with him, suffered injuries to his hands.
His workmates tried for three hours to calm him down but he threatened to commit suicide.
A group of policemen from the Bebuloh and Labuan police stations, led by Farid and CID chief DSP Boniface Bajai, tried to calm him down but the sergeant became more aggressive.
He finally agreed to drive his own car to the police station to surrender at 6pm and was taken to hospital.
