700 extra places for Indian matric students

Najib blames 'meritocracy system introduced by a previous leader' for drop in percentage of Indians students.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has approved an additional 700 placements for Indian students attending matriculation programmes at public universities this year, said Prime Minister Najib Razak.

He said the number was an increase to 1,500 placements approved by the government previously to give more opportunities to students from the Indian community to pursue their education to a higher level.

“The effort is also to achieve a level of 7% Indian students pursuing their students at public universities. This is my hope and it is not merely an empty promise but a promise to be fulfilled,” he said when launching a special investment scheme today for Malaysian Indians who fall under the Bottom 40 (B40) group.

He said the meritocracy system introduced by a previous leader had resulted in a drop from 7% to 4% in the proportion of Indian students entering universities.

“So I have to find a way to ensure all races get equal opportunities and not miss out on education because meritocracy in education caused the Indian community to be the biggest loser,” he said.
