
He said the number was an increase to 1,500 placements approved by the government previously to give more opportunities to students from the Indian community to pursue their education to a higher level.
“The effort is also to achieve a level of 7% Indian students pursuing their students at public universities. This is my hope and it is not merely an empty promise but a promise to be fulfilled,” he said when launching a special investment scheme today for Malaysian Indians who fall under the Bottom 40 (B40) group.
He said the meritocracy system introduced by a previous leader had resulted in a drop from 7% to 4% in the proportion of Indian students entering universities.
“So I have to find a way to ensure all races get equal opportunities and not miss out on education because meritocracy in education caused the Indian community to be the biggest loser,” he said.
