GEORGE TOWN:
The Penang state legislative assembly will be dissolved next week, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today, following the prime minister’s announcement that Parliament will be dissolved.

He said the state executive council will convene in the next few days and he will then proceed to seek an audience with the Governor, Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.

“After receiving the governor’s consent, I will then advise the speaker of the state legislative assembly on the date for the dissolution.

“That is what we can say today. We will inform everything after the state exco meeting is held, but it is definitely next week,” Lim said.

In a brief text message, the Speaker, Law Choo Kiang, said he will make further remarks once the governor’s consent was obtained.

Lim said the announcement of Parliament’s dissolution had been expected and he felt that most people were eagerly waiting for the general election.

“We hope the people can make the right decision so that Malaysia can stand straight, to rise again as a country that is clean, green, healthy and safe,” he said.

Prime Minister Najib Razak announced today that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented for Parliament to be dissolved from tomorrow.

The Election Commission will now set the dates for the nomination of candidates and the polling day. Based on past practice, there could be about two to three weeks in between for campaigning.
