Nair, who is still a PRM member, said he and several other members had been hearing news about PRM’s plan to field candidates in various state and parliamentary constituencies in the coming general election.
He expressed his shock at the news, and said the plans had not been discussed with party members.
He accused the national congress committee of making decisions without the necessary support and quorum needed.
“In my report, I have asked the RoS to investigate why PRM has not yet organised its national congress to elect the new committee. According to our constitution, this must be done every three years. However, according to committee secretary Koh Swee Yong, the RoS had given permission to delay the national congress,” he said in a press conference today.
Nair said some current members were completely in the dark about this and had wanted clarification from the RoS. He said he also informed the RoS that the majority of party members were not supportive of delaying the national congress.
“Taking into account that the current term of the National Congress Committee has actually expired, the committee has no authority to make any decision, including on its plan to field candidates in the coming GE14.
“I want the RoS to thoroughly probe PRM. They were so strict with Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s party (PPBM), they must be strict with PRM also. I challenge RoS to check PRM. Get the party to furnish them with all the details. RoS should be fair to everybody,” he said.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia had been provisionally dissolved by the RoS for failure to furnish documents and details within the stipulated period, following hundreds of complaints filed by PPBM members.
PPBM has a month to furnish more documents to RoS, failing which it could be permanently deregistered.
The party was formed in 2016 after the fallout between Prime Minister Najib Razak and his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin.
Nair also demanded to know whether the candidates contesting in GE14 under the PRM banner were members of the party and if the central committee was doing its job in approving all membership applications.
He also questioned when the present leaders were elected and claimed that the current members were not aware of anything.
“It looks like anyone who wants to stand in the election, they are being given the ticket to do so.
“Back then (in 2004), our candidate contested the Balik Pulau parliamentary seat. Now they supposedly want to put candidates in every seat. “I would like to ask them, where is the money coming from? Standing in the GE is not cheap,” he said.
It was previously reported that PRM had set its sights on 30 out of the 40 state seats in Penang in GE14, as it attempts to make a comeback after a long political hiatus.
State chairman Tang Hiang Lye reportedly said the party had decided to make a comeback as the present Penang government was “not doing much to uplift the living standards of Penangites”.
Tang also announced five candidates who would be contesting in Penang state constituencies under the PRM banner in GE14. They are former National Union of Journalists leader Chua Cheong Wee, former journalist Chew Seng Tung, Yeoh Cheng Huat, Lai Yean Nee and Tan Kim Hock.
Gary further asked if the candidates knew who PRM’s founder is and if they knew the history behind the party’s symbol of a buffalo head.
“They do not know the symbol, and yet they are our representatives. Are they party members in the first place? I consider them clowns. I believe there is someone behind them,” he said.
Gary also questioned the motive of the PRM candidates as Malaysians, in general, would have decided to either vote for Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Harapan. “What is their motive? Why is PRM fielding candidates when they are bound to lose their deposits anyway?
“They are bringing shame to one of the oldest opposition parties in Malaysia,” Gary said.
Tang, when contacted, declined to comment on the allegations made by Gary.
