KUALA LUMPUR:
PAS today remained buoyant despite the lack of debate on party president Abdul Hadi Awang’s proposal to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal) Jurisdiction Act in the Dewan Rakyat, saying this should not be seen as a failure.

Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan said the motion could have been debated as there was ample time, but added that lack of debate would not harm his party’s chances in the general election.

In the Dewan Rakyat order paper, Hadi’s motion on the bill was scheduled to be debated today. However, the sitting was adjourned during lunch hour after the finance ministry’s motion on the Financial Procedures Act was debated.

“We are satisfied. We have done our part in bringing the motion to suggest the amendment,” Takiyuddin said during a press conference with other PAS MPs at the Dewan Rakyat media centre.

Hadi’s motion seeks approval to table a private member’s bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act and provide greater powers for the Shariah Courts to handle criminal offences.

Last year, Hadi’s motion was given priority over other government business in the Dewan Rakyat, and he was able to propose the motion which was seconded by Takiyuddin.

However, no debate on the motion took place and chaos erupted in the house after the speaker adjourned proceedings sine die following a motion by the government’s parliamentary minister Azalina Othman Said.

Today is the final day of the current sitting. It is the last day of Malaysia’s 13th Parliament, as Prime Minister Najib Razak is expected to seek its dissolution tomorrow and call for a general election.
