JOHOR BAHRU:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has picked up two officers of the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) complex suspected of soliciting and receiving bribes from a restaurant owner.

The arrests were made about 3pm at RAPID in Pengerang, a source said.

The source said the two men, aged 44 and 49, were a security officer and a health, safety and environment manager.

Investigations found the suspects allegedly received RM25,000 in bribes from the individual as an inducement to open a canteen and to approve a gas pipe at a cafe in the area.

The case will be investigated under Section 16 (a) (A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 which provides for a fine five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and jail up to 20 years upon conviction.

Johor MACC director Azmi Alias, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said both suspects would be brought to court the next day for a remand application to facilitate investigations.
