In a statement, the wing’s vice-chief Sivamalar Genapathy said Jayeendiran Kumaresan, 18, lodged a formal report with Suhakam today following three months of inaction from Bukit Aman.
She said Jayeendiran and his father, A Kumaresan, were arrested on Nov 7 and remanded for eight days as part of police investigations into a robbery case.
During the remand period, Jayeendiran claimed he was tortured and beaten with a rubber hose for more than an hour by two plain-clothes policemen.
He also said he was unlawfully forced into making a confession after the police allegedly threatened to beat his father, Sivamalar added.
She said when Jayeendiran complained of pain from his injuries and dehydration, one of the officers kicked him while the other poured water from the toilet bowl into his nostrils.
Although both Jayeendiran and his father were released without any charges, Sivamalar said the youth now faced trauma as a result of his ordeal.
He lodged a report on the matter on Nov 27, but according to Sivamalar, they had not heard of any concrete action taken by the police.
Pointing out that Jayeendiran’s complaint to Suhakam came only a day after the prime minister launched a new human rights action plan, Sivamalar who is head of Pakatan Harapan’s women’s wing legal bureau, said Najib Razak must demonstrate his sincerity in the matter.
“If the prime minister truly believes in his National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP), then he must prove his sincerity and immediately implement the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission, failing which his promises will appear nothing more than another election gimmick.
“Silence over the many devastating accounts of police brutality, police shootings and deaths in police custody under the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Razak should not be ignored.
“We cannot allow any further allegations of torture, shootings or death in police custody to be swept under the carpet.”
