KUALA LUMPUR:
The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) wants the education ministry to ensure that the installation of CCTV cameras in schools is purely for security purposes and not to monitor teachers.

NUTP secretary-general Harry Tan was commenting on complaints from teachers at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Penchala here that the school administration had installed CCTV cameras in the staff room.

In a statement, he said installing CCTV cameras in the teachers’ room would only jeopardise their privacy and cause other issues related to sensitivities.

This followed the NUTP’s call for CCTV cameras to be installed in public areas to monitor for crime and ensure the security of teachers and students.

Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan was subsequently reported as saying that the ministry was identifying high-risk schools where cameras could be installed for these purposes.
