PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today questioned how the government would settle 1MDB debts, a day after Putrajaya said the controversy-riddled state firm is set to shut down once the arrears are cleared.
“They need to tell us where the money is going to come from,” the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman told a press conference in Kuantan today, adding that the government lacks funds.
Yesterday, treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, who also chairs 1MDB, said the company would be shut down after all of its debts were settled, adding that this could be achieved with its current rationalisation plan.
Last year, Prime Minister Najib Razak said 1MDB, which owes some RM50 billion as of January 2016, had cleared all its bank and short-term debts.
