No proof from Umno that Kuok funded DAP, says Guan Eng

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says Umno has only challenged the party to prove otherwise, which is 'ridiculous'.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today took Umno to task over its attacks on the party regarding claims that billionaire Robert Kuok had channelled funds to DAP.

Accusing Barisan Nasional (BN) of being willing to “play with racial fire and burn down the country” to stay in power, Lim said Umno had until now offered no proof that any such donations had taken place.

“Apparently Umno knows more than DAP that Robert Kuok has donated money to DAP.

“Up to now, no proof has been shown by Umno except to challenge DAP to prove otherwise. This is ridiculous and is no different from Umno alleging that DAP murdered Mongolian model Altantuya and challenging us to prove otherwise,” he said in a statement.

The allegation that Kuok had given funds to DAP surfaced earlier this week after blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin said the tycoon had done so through his nephew James, who has denied the claim.

Kuok himself has also denied that he is funding political parties to overthrow the Malaysian government or embarking on a campaign to manipulate the country’s democratic process.

Raja Petra however claimed that Kuok had an agenda to replace Malaysia’s leadership with DAP, so that the Chinese could be in power.

Lim said both Umno and MIC had been attacking Kuok and DAP in a “rampage” of fake news and “ferocious personal attacks”.

He said even if Kuok had donated money to DAP, there was nothing wrong with this in a democracy.

He called on MCA, which had yesterday admonished Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz for reportedly labelling Kuok a “pondan”, to put principles ahead of power in the matter.

He said if MCA and Gerakan failed to get the cabinet to direct Umno and MIC to apologise for their attacks, they should break ties with Umno and withdraw from BN.

“Would both MCA and Gerakan dare to put principles ahead of position of power, put right ahead of wrong, put fair play ahead of bullying, by pulling out of BN?”
